Sveinung Rudjord Unneland

Sveinung Rudjord Unneland (b. 1981) graduated from the Bergen Academy of Fine Arts and the Berlin-Weissense University of Art (2002-2007). He has since lived in Bergen, where he has combined his own artistic practice with teaching at the Norwegian Academy of Fine Arts (KMD) and the School of Architecture (BAS). In 2023 he completed his PhD in artistic research with the project "Urgent Affairs, Strange Empathy".

What cognitive sustainability does painting have today? The question runs like a thread throughout Unneland's practice leading Unneland into many artistic directions. Sometimes the question plays out within the safe structure of a painting in a frame, other times far out into space and enveloping it. In Unneland's paintings, traces of forgotten historical ideals and lost ideological ambitions can be intuited, but also a love for the diversity of the artistic tradition and the freedom-affirming motif at its center.

Unneland has previously exhibited his work at, among others, Hordaland Kunstsenter, Kunstnerforbundet, Trykkeriet, Bergen Kunstmuseum, Entrée, LNM, Østfold Kunstnersenter, Tag Team Studio, After the Butcher and Kristiansand Kunsthall. He has previously been involved with several KORO projects and contributions to exhibitions at CAPC, Musée d'art contemporain Bordeaux.
